Prof. Yervant Terzian

Prof. Yervant Terzian (February 9, 1939 – November 25, 2019) was a world-renowned astrophysicist, educator, philanthropist, and a dear friend and founder of FAR’s Armenian National Science and Education Fund (ANSEF). A Tish Distinguished University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University, he contributed greatly to the field of astronomy as a researcher, teacher and administrator. In 2018, he received NASA’s Public Service Medal, its highest honor, and one of the many awards he received throughout his life.

In addition to his numerous activities in the international field, Professor Terzian also strongly supported the development of astronomy and science in Armenia, specifically through ANSEF. For the last 20 years, ANSEF has supported thousands of Armenian scientists through research assistance. For many grant recipients, ANSEF awards have been their springboard to world-class scientific achievements.

Yervant’s contagious energy and optimism were sourced by his deep love for Science, Humanity, and his Greek and Armenian roots. ANSEF Board members feel fortunate to have worked with him over several decades as we commit to carry on his legacy at ANSEF. As the astrophysics community mourns a central figure, we will miss him as a friend, a leader, and a source of immense inspiration.
